Your first useful result
A larger canvas should serve a composition rather than merely add pixels. Start with a photograph that needs room for a title or a different format. Extend, Fill, Finish, Compare and Projects keep the original and your edge decisions easy to review.
Identify the space your composition needs
Create or reopen a named project and import the authorised source. Decide whether you need a banner, portrait crop or breathing room around a subject. Keep an original separately. Extra canvas cannot recover detail absent from the source, so start with appropriate resolution and choose an extension small enough to inspect clearly on your device.
Set the bounds in Extend
Adjust top, bottom, left and right independently or select an available aspect ratio. For a title above a portrait, add more room at the top instead of expanding every side equally. Review the subject's position and destination dimensions before filling. The correct canvas is the one that supports the layout, not necessarily the largest one available.
Choose how to fill the new region
Use Fill to select continuation, reflection, stretch or blend where appropriate. A simple wall, foliage and a strong horizon behave differently. Solid or transparent space can suit a graphic layout better than a photographic extension. Review each boundary and choose the mode for the source rather than expecting one automatic treatment to work on every image.
Make seams, colour and texture coherent
In Finish, inspect the join between the original and added region. Use blending and adjustment controls in small steps, then view the whole composition again. Reflection can introduce obvious symmetry; stretching can distort straight lines. A smooth boundary at high zoom can still look repetitive at normal viewing distance. Correct the treatment rather than hiding it with unrelated changes.
Review every edge and corner
Compare the result against the source. Check corners where two extensions meet, not only the centre of each edge. Recheck the subject, horizon and repeated texture. If an extension distracts, reduce the bounds, change mode or use deliberate solid or transparent space. Confirm that a crop has not removed the breathing room you meant to create.
Save and inspect the exported composition
Wait for project saving, export with the available settings and reopen the file outside Outpaint. Verify dimensions, intended transparency and all edges. The project retains bounds, fill choices and history; the export is the delivery asset. Controls marked Coming soon are not needed for deterministic modes. If a task fails, retain the project and try a smaller or simpler extension.
Common questions
Should all four edges have the same amount?
No. Choose the bounds for the composition. A tall portrait and a wide banner generally need different space.
Why is transparency not visible in the download?
Check that the output format supports it. A viewer can also show a background behind otherwise transparent pixels.
